She fell once while taking the
dog to the trainer. She fell another time while walking along a black sand
beach. She fell on Thanksgiving Day; she was carrying Grandma Agnes’ very
important sweet potato pie. She fell after she left the bank and all of her 20
dollar bills went fluttering away in the wind.
Her father,
mother, husband, sister, cousin, grandmother, best friend, colleague,
assistant, and client, all witnessed her fall.
But she
never remembered when she fell.
“But you
never remember when you fall? That’s odd don’t you think? Don’t you think?”
people asked urgently.
But she
didn’t think and she didn’t answer. She didn’t think about her falls. About her
bruises. About her sprains. About her fractures. About her scratches.
When she
was falling she was only thinking, “This might be the last time I fall. And if
it is at least I fall walking and trying. And if it isn’t then at least I know
will try walking again.”
